Migration is of enormous benefit to a country and is not a recent phenomenon. For hundreds of years, people have moved across borders in search of a better life for themselves and their families. The decision is triggered when the combination of “push” and “pull” forces – the lack of opportunities at home and the perceived potential of a fresh start – overwhelms the wrench of leaving familiar surrounds and the risks of the unknown. The freedom of movement unleashed by globalisation has not embraced the latent mobility of the global workforce, other than the most highly skilled.

Estimates suggest that out of approximately 175 million migrants around the world, highly skilled migrant workers; make up approximately 30% of the world’s migrant population. Highly skilled migrant workers contribute to the economies of their host countries, and the remittances they send home augment their home economies. Highly skilled migrant workers are less vulnerable to exploitation and in many sectors are invariably at a premium and richer countries compete to attract highly skilled workers.

The UK is a developed country, with the world's sixth largest economy by nominal GDP and the seventh largest by purchasing power parity. It was the world's first industrialised country and the world's foremost power during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The UK economy is currently looking in the best shape out of all other European economies. An economy operating at full capacity with no cyclical or structural unemployment is said to be at full employment. This situation was the close to the norm in the UK and most other developed countries in the 1950s, 1960s and much of the 1970s. The 1980s and early 1990s then witnessed a period of mass unemployment, but the UK has since moved closer to full employment once again.

The United Kingdom has always been attracting and retaining highly skilled migrants, who would increase the skills and knowledge-base of the UK. The economic slowdown had not stopped employers from recruiting highly skilled migrant workers to fill skills shortages in the UK. Most of the UK employers employ highly skilled migrant workers because they are more hard-working, reliable and tend to be more qualified or have more experience. Highly skilled migrants are more likely to be in work, earn more and are therefore likely to be paying more tax, and are a lighter burden on public finances and in turn benefiting the UK economy. One estimate suggests that 40 million skilled migrant workers will be needed in the EU before 2050.

People from all cultures and ethnicities can be found in every corner of UK and each person in his or her own way has contributed to make the UK economy stronger. UK is and has always been a mixed race society. Out of the total UK population, 7.9% are of mixed race or ethnic minority.
